Parent Education Workshop
Learning While Playing: The Benefits of Playtime for Babies and Beyond

Friday, February 19, 2010

Playing with your child may seem like all fun and games – building block towers, digging in the sand, and watching as your child tries his chubby hand at rolling a ball. But make no mistake, what looks like downtime is work to little ones, and toys are often the tools for getting the job done.

We will delve deep into the developmental benefits of play and how to encourage the great learning that comes from play. The skills your children learn through play will transfer to all areas of their lives as they grow up. Perhaps you will learn some fun ways to play yourself!

Location: James Park Elementary School Annex
1730 Coquitlam Avenue, Port Coquitlam
(behind James Park School)
Time: 9:00 a.m.—11:00 a.m.
Cost: Free

Join us for a continental breakfast from 9:00 a.m.–9:30 a.m.
A limited number of child minding spaces are available!

MAKE THE CONNECTION

Come play with your child under 6 in a new and exciting series! Learn more about your child's development from skilled early childhood staff. What are they learning through play? How can you build their skills, like language, socialization, and problem solving at home and in the community?

YOU MAKE THE DIFFERENCE

Learn to interact positively with your child through this 9 week educational group. Parents will learn skills through discussion, videotapes, and the parent handbook while their children are cared for by the child minders. At the end of each session, parents are encouraged to practice what they have learned through fun-filled activities with their child. Find out how you can use music, books, play and your own creativity to strengthen your bond with your child!

Proactive Approaches to Challenging Behaviour Workshop for Parents of Tweens & Teens

The lives of children and families are complex and very busy. Families are diverse. There are many challenges in caring for children in today's society, and this workshop is intended to reduce some of those challenges by promoting a better understanding of our children; who they ar, who they like to be with, how they learn and how they communicate.

The objective of this workshop is to assist parents and care providers in understanding children and children's behaviors;why children are responding in situations the way they do. And to provide some ideas and strategies in how to teach them a more "pro-social" way to get their needs and wants met.
